Three tomato sauces urgently recalled over fears they may cause 'fatal' botulism

Urgent Recall of Three Tomato Sauces Due to Botulism Risk

Customers have been urgently advised to return specific tomato sauces for a full refund amid serious health concerns. First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Connecticut, announced a recall of three popular tomato-based pasta sauces due to potential contamination by Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for life-threatening botulism.

Details of the Recalled Products

The products were distributed between Connecticut and Massachusetts, primarily through Big Y and possibly other retailers, with a use-by date of September 26, 2025. Distribution began on September 22, 2025.

Health Risks and Regulatory Statement

Botulism results from toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria that attack the nervous system and can cause paralysis. Although no cases of illness have been reported, the risk is severe enough to warrant this recall.

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the sauces were "manufactured without an adequately evaluated production process to prevent the formation of the dangerous bacterium."

The bacteria typically develop in improperly processed acidified or low-acid canned foods.

Consumer Action

Consumers who have purchased any of these sauces are strongly encouraged to return them to the place of purchase to receive a full refund.

"Customers have been urged to return the product to the store for a full refund."

Summary: An urgent recall has been issued for three tomato sauces from First and Last Bakery due to botulism risk caused by inadequate production safeguards, with consumers advised to return the products immediately.
