On October 31, Danish households and companies helped stabilize the national power grid by providing ancillary services for the first time through the Swedish energy services company CheckWatt. This initiative supports the creation of a more stable, efficient, and renewable energy system.
The batteries used in the project deliver ancillary services to the national grid operator Energinet. These services are crucial for maintaining balance in the grid, as they can rapidly increase or decrease power flow to ensure system stability.
By preventing power disturbances, these systems make it easier to integrate cheaper wind and solar energy, since batteries can quickly respond to fluctuations in renewable generation.
CheckWatt’s platform pools numerous small battery units into a single virtual power plant, allowing even small-scale energy assets to participate in balancing the grid. This connection helps owners earn additional income from their battery systems while contributing to a resilient power network.
“Batteries are becoming a significant asset for the energy systems of Denmark and Europe, and Danish households and companies can now directly participate in supporting the system.”
