Spitfire Joins Remembrance Sunday in Durham

A full-size reproduction Spitfire MK IX will serve as a powerful tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who have served in past and present conflicts during this year’s Remembrance Sunday in Durham.

The aircraft, hand-built by Simply Spitfire, will be displayed in Millennium Place, Durham City, from 9:00am to 2:00pm on Sunday, 9 November 2025. The exhibition coincides with two major milestones: the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Honouring Service and Sacrifice

Durham’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Andrew Harrison, initiated the idea of featuring the Spitfire to mark these anniversaries in a memorable way.

“We wanted to do something particularly special this year to remember the bravery of those who served,” said Cllr Andrew Harrison.

With assistance from Squadron Leader (Retired) James A. Cowan MBE and Simply Spitfire, the council secured the reproduction aircraft as a symbolic centrepiece for the commemorations.

Part of the Parade

The Spitfire will be positioned along the route of Durham City’s annual Remembrance Parade, which runs from 10:00am to noon the same morning, allowing participants and spectators to view the historic fighter replica as part of the tribute.
