Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo recently shared a humorous story following Palmeiras’ stunning 4-0 victory over LDU in the Copa Libertadores semi-final — a result that cost him a dinner with teammate Andrey Santos.
In an interview with ESPN Brazil, the Ecuadorian explained that he had been certain LDU would advance. Confident in Ecuadorian clubs’ fighting spirit, Caicedo wagered a dinner with Andrey, who believed Palmeiras could overturn the first-leg deficit.
“I bet a dinner with Andrey Santos! I said it was impossible for LDU to lose in Brazil against Palmeiras,” Caicedo said.
Caicedo, who came through the ranks at Independiente del Valle, went to sleep expecting good news the next morning. Instead, he woke up to discover that Abel Ferreira’s side had mounted a remarkable comeback at Allianz Parque, winning 4-0 and reaching the final.
“When I woke up and saw 4-0… I couldn’t believe it!” the Chelsea star admitted.
Although disappointed for LDU and Ecuadorian football, Caicedo acknowledged Palmeiras’ formidable strength while praising the resilience and competitiveness of his home country’s teams.
Moisés Caicedo humorously recounted a lost bet with teammate Andrey Santos after Palmeiras’ dramatic 4-0 win over LDU reversed expectations and showcased South American football’s unpredictable charm.
