The next-generation Toyota Hilux has officially debuted, marking a significant update to the globally popular bakkie. The unveiling took place in Thailand, showcasing what customers can expect when it arrives in South Africa in 2026.
Toyota confirmed that the new Hilux would be built locally in South Africa, with production planned for 2026. While the exact launch date remains unconfirmed, the company assures local availability in the same year.
As predicted by earlier spy photos, the 2026 Hilux represents a comprehensive redesign rather than a completely new platform. The rear end gets a bolder, more rugged appearance, while the midsection remains similar to the outgoing model aside from new running boards.
The front and rear sections are notably different. The front shows slimmer headlights highlighted by a plastic bar carrying bold
“TOYOTA”lettering above a wide honeycomb-pattern grille.
Under the bonnet, the updated Hilux retains the reliable 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine generating 150 kW and 500 Nm. Some models will include the 48V mild-hybrid system for improved efficiency. Transmission options remain a six-speed automatic or manual gearbox.
Although full specifications for South Africa are yet to be disclosed, they are expected to closely follow the European ‘Invincible’ version, balancing performance, style, and durability.
The 2026 Toyota Hilux refines its proven formula with upgraded styling, hybrid technology, and local production, confirming Toyota’s commitment to the South African market.
