Typhoon Fung-wong Weakens in the Philippines, Four Dead

Super Typhoon Fung-wong, one of the strongest storms this year in the Philippines, has caused four fatalities as authorities begin to assess damage after the storm's intensity decreased. No major destruction reports have emerged so far.

Before making landfall on Sunday, over one million people were evacuated from Luzon, the country's most populous island. The typhoon brought powerful winds, heavy rain, and storm surges, disrupting sleep for many residents.

"We could not sleep because of the winds hitting our metal sheets and tree branches falling," said Romeo Mariano, who sheltered with his grandmother in Isabela province. "When we got out to check our home, we saw the damage."

Civil defense senior official Raffy Alejandro expressed cautious optimism about the death toll, stating on Monday that the number of fatalities "will be minimal."

Two children died in a mudslide that buried a house in Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya, according to regional civil defense official Alvin Ayson. These losses followed two other deaths caused by drowning and falling debris.

In the province of Aurora, where Fung-wong made landfall, landslides isolated at least four towns, Alejandro added.

Summary: Typhoon Fung-wong caused four deaths and significant evacuations in the Philippines, with initial reports indicating limited damage as authorities continue assessments.
