Eddie Howe asked about Nick Pope’s future after injury
Newcastle United’s first-choice goalkeeper, Nick Pope, will undergo a medical scan to assess the severity of the groin injury he sustained during the match against Manchester United. The goalkeeper was forced off late in the game after appearing to pull up when diving to collect the ball.
Head coach Eddie Howe confirmed after the match that Pope’s condition looked serious and said the club’s medical staff would determine the time needed for recovery once the scan results were available.
“We don’t know the exact damage yet, but it didn’t look good,” Howe stated. “He’s a massive part of what we do, and it’s a huge blow for him and for us.”
When asked whether Pope would have been dropped for the upcoming Premier League game at Everton, Howe firmly denied that possibility, emphasizing the goalkeeper’s importance to the team.
“No, not at all. Nick is our number one. His performances speak for themselves. The plan was for him to play at Everton,” the manager added.
Howe explained that despite Newcastle’s busy schedule and recent challenges with injuries, the coaching team had no plans to rotate Pope out of the lineup. His absence now opens the door for backup goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka to step in during a crucial run of fixtures.
The injury adds to Newcastle’s growing list of concerns as the club faces several key league and European matches in the coming weeks.
“We have to adapt and respond, as we’ve done before,” Howe said. “It’s a test for the squad, and everyone will need to step up.”
