Free holiday recycling in Fargo

The City of Fargo is offering residents free options to dispose of old holiday string lights and extra cardboard in an environmentally responsible way. The program is designed to reduce landfill waste and encourage proper recycling during the holiday season.

Holiday lights recycling

Residents can drop off unwanted string lights, including both LED models and older styles, at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 606 43 1/2 St. N. The facility accepts these items from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, through January 31, 2025. Rope-style lights are not accepted in this program.

Free cardboard and waste drop-off

Fargo residents may also use the city’s free residential transfer station to dispose of surplus cardboard generated by holiday shopping and other household waste. The transfer station operates at the Fargo Landfill, located at 4501 7th Ave. N. Accepted materials include cardboard, non-freon appliances, old furniture and similar household items.

Program conditions and limitations

To access the free transfer station services, residents must provide proof of Fargo residency. Commercial waste and construction or building materials are not allowed under this program. The initiative focuses on typical residential items to keep the service efficient and cost-effective.
