Police reported that two light aircraft collided mid-air over southwest Sydney on Sunday afternoon. One of the planes subsequently crashed into bushland near Napperfield Airfield in Wedderburn.
Emergency services responded quickly, but one of the pilots died at the scene. Investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) have begun examining the wreckage and collecting flight data to determine the cause of the accident.
Authorities have cordoned off the area, and local residents are being advised to avoid nearby roads while the investigation continues.
“It’s a tragic incident. Our teams are working to understand what happened,” a police spokesperson said.
