Zimbabwean convict Peter Dube has been handed two life sentences and an additional 20 years for his role in a shocking triple murder and two attempted murders committed in Gweru.
Dube, a businessman from Gweru, fatally shot three people — his wife, a friend, and her suspected lover — in 2021. He also attempted to kill two others during the rampage. After committing the crimes, he initially fled to South Africa before being deported back to Zimbabwe in 2024 to face justice.
During sentencing, the High Court noted that Dube acted with premeditation and cruelty. The judge ruled that the heinous nature of his crimes warranted the harshest possible penalty. The 20-year addition covered the two attempted murder charges.
The community of Gweru expressed relief at the conclusion of a case that had shocked the nation. Many saw the judgment as a strong statement against domestic and gender-based violence, which remain serious concerns in Zimbabwe.
“This sentence brings closure to the victims’ families and serves as a deterrent to similar acts,” said a state prosecutor outside the courtroom.
Author’s summary: The Gweru murderer Peter Dube was sentenced to two life terms and 20 extra years for killing three people and attempting to kill two others, marking a strong judicial stance against violent crime.
