Fiery Plane Crash at Shellharbour Airport
A tragic incident occurred at Shellharbour airport on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of three people.
"In all my time as a police officer I've never been to an aviation incident like this."
The plane, a Piper Cherokee Lance aircraft, crashed and caught fire after taking off from the airport at around 10am on October 11.
- The aircraft got about 30 metres into the air before dipping and contacting the tarmac with its left wing.
- The plane was then engulfed in flames, and all three people on board were confirmed deceased.
According to Lake Illawarra police district's chief inspector Aaron Wunderlich, witnesses described the incident in detail.
"At that point, witnesses have described the aircraft has then dipped with its left wing coming down and contacting the tarmac,"
