Utah Valley University (UVU) is boosting its security and police presence following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on campus on September 10.
A UVU spokesman confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation that the university is hiring eight new police officers and two new security managers to enhance oversight and support for campus events.
The university faced significant criticism after Kirk's fatal shooting due to perceived inadequate security. Campus police had previously expressed concerns about being understaffed for a student population of 46,000.
On the day of the incident, only six officers were on duty.
“University police officers play a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment by enforcing local, state, and federal laws while upholding the university’s values of respect, integrity, and inclusion,” said Ellen Treanor, UVU’s associate vice president of strategic communications.
“Officers protect students, employees, visitors, and property, and take a proactive approach to crime prevention, education, and community engagement.”
The expanded police force aims to create a safer campus environment through increased crime prevention efforts and community involvement.
