Co-Chairman: Deirdre Coombe, Professor, Australia

Dr Coombe is a Professor in Biomedical Sciences at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia and her work spans both the academic and corporate worlds. She is also Chief Scientific Officer and a Director of Glycan Biosciences, a biotechnology company focusing on the development of carbohydrate-based drugs for inflammatory diseases. She is on the Editorial Board of Clinical Medicine Insights: Therapeutics and has accepted a position on the Editorial Board of International Journal of Systems Biology and Biomedical Technologies.
After 25 years of research she has an international reputation on the structure and function of a class of carbohydrates: GlycosAminoGlycans (GAGs). The biological activities of GAGs indicated that they may have important roles in a number of diseases and in recent years Dr Coombe’s research has concentrated on the respiratory, inflammatory diseases of asthma and allergic rhinitis in this regard. She has worked at research institutions and Universities in the UK and Australia including, the National Institute for Medical Research, London; Oxford University, Oxford; and the Australian National University, Canberra. She was also a co-founder of the biotechnology company Glycan Biosciences Pty Ltd., which was founded from her research work.
