Nearly 600 customers in the Moss Park area experienced a power outage starting at 8:11 a.m. Wednesday due to an underground cable fault, Toronto Hydro reported.
Toronto Hydro confirmed power was restored around 1 p.m. Thursday, over 24 hours after the outage began.
"The cable fault causing this outage appears to be the result of a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area," Toronto Hydro stated on social media before 4:30 p.m. "This work is unrelated to Toronto Hydro but appears to have damaged our infrastructure."
The utility explained the repair process was "complex and time-consuming" because the fault's location required careful work to safely identify, fix, and test the damaged infrastructure before restoring service.
"The damage caused by the third-party contractor is extensive, with the dig-ins occurring in multiple spots," Toronto Hydro added.
Initially, Toronto Hydro aimed to restore power by 8:30 a.m. Thursday, then updated this to 11:30 a.m., before finally stating restoration would occur in the afternoon.
