Craig Melvin, a Wofford College graduate and co-anchor of "TODAY," recently returned to Columbia to film a hometown tour segment. The episode featuring his Midlands ventures will air on NBC this week.
"You don't just host the show, you're not just one of the pieces of the show," Melvin told the Post & Courier Free Times. "You're kind of the mayor of this small town, and the name of the town is 'TODAY.'"
Having taken over Hoda Kotb's spot nearly a year ago, the Emmy-award-winning journalist describes his role as more than just a host.
Melvin told the Columbia newspaper that living away has deepened his appreciation for his hometown:
"I love it more now that I have moved away. I’ve traveled the world, I've seen a lot, but man, Columbia’s it."
According to the Post & Courier Free Times, his early experiences in Columbia shaped his understanding of journalism and community engagement.
Craig Melvin’s journey reflects a strong bond with his hometown, bringing hometown pride and personal insight to his national platform.
