Craig Melvin Returns to Columbia for Hometown Segment

Craig Melvin, co-anchor of the “TODAY” show, revisited his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, to film a special segment celebrating his roots. The segment is set to air in November.

Emotional Return to Childhood Places

During his visit, Melvin walked down the stairs of his preschool and entered the room where he first learned to read. Overwhelmed by memories, he briefly wept, calling this moment the highlight of his trip.

He also visited Lizard’s Thicket, purchased art from Ernest “The Chicken Man” Lee, and stopped by his childhood barbershop, reflecting on the people and places he cherishes in the Midlands.

“Columbia is just such a warm hug for me every time I go back,” Melvin said.

Adjusting to Life as a “TODAY” Co-Anchor

Nearly a year ago, Melvin took over Hoda Kotb’s co-anchor seat on “TODAY.” The new role brought significant responsibilities and a demanding lifestyle.

In 2025, he has adapted to the fast pace, often traveling between multiple cities in a week. His schedule includes fundraisers, town halls, luncheons, and endless promotion of the show.

Balancing Multiple Roles

Besides co-hosting, Melvin continues to engage with fans and perform reporting duties, embracing every part of his job.

“You don't just host the show, you're not just one of the pieces of the show,” he said.

His visit to Columbia served as both a personal journey and a way to share his story with viewers.

Author's summary: Craig Melvin’s heartfelt return to Columbia highlights his journey from local roots to a demanding, multifaceted role as co-anchor of the “TODAY” show.
