A new compromise has been reached within the World Zionist Congress after an earlier agreement fell apart. The proposal aims to resolve the week-long coalition deadlock that halted decision-making within the organization.
According to participants in the negotiations cited by eJewishPhilanthropy, the plan would restore Yaakov Hagoel as chair of the World Zionist Organization (WZO). After his term, leadership would transition to a representative from the centrist Yesh Atid party. Meanwhile, Rabbi Doron Perez of the religious Zionist Mizrachi movement would take on a different senior position rather than the WZO chairmanship originally proposed.
The updated proposal envisions an equal division of influence between center-left and center-right factions over the WZO and Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael–Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF). This approach is designed to bridge ideological divides while bringing stability to both institutions.
The WZO, which oversees educational and civil initiatives in Israel and abroad, plays a significant role in coordinating global Jewish activities. Negotiations at the 39th World Zionist Congress, held in Jerusalem, became contentious as parties struggled over leadership assignments and organizational priorities.
“A new proposal has been put forward to break through the impasse in the World Zionist Congress coalition talks, which have been stalled for nearly a week,” sources told eJewishPhilanthropy.
Rabbi Doron Perez, who also heads the World Mizrachi movement, is noted as the father of Capt. Daniel Perez, who was killed in October during service.
The renewed agreement in the World Zionist Congress restores leadership balance and aims to stabilize governance after days of uncertainty and negotiation deadlock.
