The Toronto Blue Jays narrowly missed winning the World Series this season, falling just one game and one run short against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their offseason decisions will greatly impact the team's future, particularly regarding star shortstop Bo Bichette.
Bichette is expected to enter free agency and is projected to command a contract near $200 million. According to Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report, the Detroit Tigers are a top contender to sign him this offseason.
“The Detroit Tigers were a popular speculative landing spot for Alex Bregman last offseason, but their biggest addition ended up being Gleyber Torres on a one-year, $15 million deal,” Reuter wrote. “As he gets set to depart for what will likely be a multi-year deal this winter, the Tigers could again make a run at signing Bregman, but another infielder might be an even better fit. Bo Bichette does not turn 28 years old until March 5, and after a down year in 2024, he returned to elite form offensively this season with a .311/.357/.483 line that included 44 doubles, 18 home runs and 94 RBI in 139 games.”
Bichette’s performance this season reestablishes him as a valuable player. Although the Blue Jays are expected to offer a competitive contract, it is uncertain if they will be willing to exceed the $200 million range.
This offseason is critical as Bo Bichette is poised to become a $200 million free agent, with the Detroit Tigers leading as prime suitors should the Blue Jays hesitate financially.
