Camilla Aviaja Olsen became Chair of the Arctic Council Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG) in May 2025. With extensive experience in Arctic affairs, she is committed to promoting sustainable development in Arctic communities and enhancing the involvement of Indigenous Peoples and local voices within the Working Group.
The SDWG is often described as the human dimension of the Arctic Council. Its work spans various issues that directly impact daily life, including health, mental wellbeing, food security, culture and languages, housing, energy, and the integration of Indigenous Peoples and local knowledge in decision-making.
The Working Group is distinctive for consistently placing people at the core of Arctic cooperation. It focuses not only on policy development but also on ensuring that Indigenous perspectives, priorities, and knowledge are deeply embedded in the Council’s initiatives.
