Florida Favorite Will Richard Unveils New Nickname with Golden State

After leaving Florida, Will Richard has found his place in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors. Though selected in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft, he quickly earned regular playing time under coach Steve Kerr and is considered one of the draft's early surprises.

Nickname Revealed

Richard shared with San Francisco's 95.7 The Game how he is adapting to the team and revealed the nickname his teammates have given him:

"They call Al [Horford] 'Big Gator,' so I'm 'Baby Gator' right now. It's either 'Rook' or 'Baby Gator.'"

Connection with Al Horford

In a symbolic circle of life, Richard plays alongside former Florida standout Al Horford, who joined Golden State after his time with Boston. Horford is in his 19th NBA season, while Richard is in his rookie year. When Horford and the Gators won their first national championship in 2006, Richard was just three years old.

Playing with NBA Veterans

Richard also reflected on the experience of playing alongside established stars like Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler:

"I grew up watching these guys. To be able to witness their greatness every game, every practice, it's a blessing to be a part of. I take a step back every day and realize how thankful I am to be in this situation."

After six games in the NBA, Richard is averaging 5.7 points per game in just 13 minutes.

Author's summary: Will Richard is quickly making his mark with the Warriors, embracing his rookie role and earning the fitting nickname "Baby Gator" alongside veteran teammate Al Horford.
