The Los Angeles Lakers have had a mixed beginning to the 2025–26 season without LeBron James, but one player is standing out: Austin Reaves. His rapid rise has caught the attention of teammates and fans alike.
Lakers forward Rui Hachimura recalled when he first realized Reaves had something special. It happened during a game against the Milwaukee Bucks, where Reaves confidently took on Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“I’m not gonna lie, three years ago, when I got traded here, I honestly didn’t know about him before. He was injured, I think, at that time,” Hachimura said. “I think he came back against Milwaukee. He made a move on Giannis at the top and finished with a layup. I was like, ‘Ooh, okay, he got it.’”
That play convinced Hachimura that Reaves could become a vital piece of the Lakers’ future. Since then, Reaves has steadily developed into a cornerstone player for the team.
Following his breakout 2022–23 season, Reaves has only improved. Over the first five games of the current season, he has averaged 34.2 points, 10 assists, and 5.6 rebounds, shooting an impressive 60% from the field.
With LeBron James recovering from sciatica and Luka Doncic still sidelined, Reaves has embraced a larger role and thrived under the added pressure.
Austin Reaves has emerged as the Lakers’ driving force, proving his talent and leadership in LeBron James’s absence while earning admiration from Rui Hachimura for his fearless play.
