Ruth E. Carter on the Symbolism of “Sinners”
Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter spoke with Gold Derby about the hidden symbolism in Ryan Coogler’s new film Sinners. The movie, set in the 1930s, blends horror elements with a deep exploration of American identity.
“It’s an American story,” Carter explained, revealing that the film’s color palette of red, white, and blue carries a distinct cultural message.
To ground the film’s narrative, Carter researched 1930s fashion extensively — from mobster looks to textiles rooted in spiritual traditions. Her designs add historical and emotional depth to the story of the Smokestack Twins, Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore, both portrayed by Michael B. Jordan. The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld as Stack’s former lover, Mary, and Sammie, known as “Preacher Boy.”
