Alberta lawmaker Matt Jeneroux shocked Ottawa on the evening of November 6 by resigning from the House of Commons. This resignation marks the Conservative Party’s second loss of a Member of Parliament within three days.
The departure adds pressure on Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party and main opponent of Prime Minister Mark Carney. The timing is critical as Carney’s government faces a crucial budget vote, released on November 4, which must pass in the House to avoid the government’s collapse.
Matt Jeneroux did not disclose his reasons for resigning in his social media statement and has not responded to requests for comments.
Just two days before Jeneroux’s resignation, Chris d’Entremont, a Conservative MP from Nova Scotia, defected to Carney’s Liberal Party.
The defection of Mr Chris d’Entremont gave the Liberals 170 seats, just two shy of a majority in Parliament.
The Conservative Party is facing challenges after losing two MPs in three days amid a critical budget vote that could determine the government’s future stability.
