Several individuals fell ill at Joint Base Andrews, a US military installation near Washington, after a suspicious package containing an unknown white powder was delivered and opened.
The package was opened inside a building at the base, which was subsequently evacuated along with an adjacent connected building. A cordon was established around the area as a safety precaution.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building (at the base) were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” said Joint Base Andrews in a statement.
The affected building also accommodates the Air National Guard Readiness Center. Joint Base Andrews, located in Maryland, is notably used by US President Donald Trump for boarding flights to key engagements.
First responders from Joint Base Andrews assessed the situation, found no immediate threats, and transferred the scene to the Office of Special Investigations.
“Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations. An investigation is currently ongoing,” reported CNN.
Those affected were taken to the on-base Malcolm Grow Medical Center for treatment.
