Redshirt freshman Olivier Rioux of Florida basketball set a new NCAA record during the Gators' decisive win. Standing 7 feet 9 inches tall, Rioux became the tallest player ever to participate in a college basketball game.
Although the unveiling of the Gators' national championship banner was scheduled for the home opener, it was overshadowed by Rioux's historic moment. In the final minutes of Florida’s 104-64 victory over North Florida, the student section enthusiastically chanted for the 7-foot-9 freshman to enter the game.
After a brief pause, Florida head coach Todd Golden gave in to the crowd's demand.
“Todd just looked at me,” Rioux recalled. “And I just (pretends to take shirt off) with my t-shirt.”
Rioux reflected on the experience:
“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Rioux entered the game with 2 minutes and 9 seconds left, officially becoming the tallest player in college basketball history. The crowd of 10,065 erupted in celebration.
When asked about owning the record, Rioux responded with humor:
“It’s another day, I guess.”
Coach Todd Golden shared a similar laid-back attitude:
“Not something that I think that much about. I like the banner dropping before better. I'm happy for him that he got an opportunity to get out there tonight.”
This milestone marked a memorable moment for both Rioux and Florida basketball fans.
