Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux from Alberta has announced that he will step down from his seat in the House of Commons after widespread speculation that he planned to join the governing Liberals. His decision follows a tumultuous week for the Conservative Party.
In a letter obtained by the National Post, the Edmonton Riverbend representative said he had informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday about his intention to resign, though he did not specify the exact date.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,”
Jeneroux wrote, without providing details about what prompted his sudden departure. First elected in 2015, he acknowledged his respect for many individuals serving on both sides of the House of Commons, while making little mention of party leader Pierre Poilievre.
His exit marks the second resignation from the Conservative caucus in just three days, creating another challenge for Poilievre ahead of the party’s upcoming leadership review in January.
