Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux Denies Coercion in Resignation

Alberta Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux announced on Thursday that he is stepping down from the House of Commons, refuting speculation that he was planning to join the Liberal Party. The announcement followed days of rumours suggesting he might cross the floor, while sources within the Conservatives claimed he was under pressure to stay.

"I want to be clear that there was no coercion involved in my decision to resign. I consider my colleagues in the Conservative Party very close friends, and I will miss them dearly."

His decision marks the second Conservative resignation this week, after Nova Scotia MP Chris d'Entremont joined the Liberals on Tuesday—two developments that deal setbacks to Pierre Poilievre’s leadership and give the minority Liberal government additional room to advance key legislation, including the recent budget.

Jeneroux’s statement made only a brief mention of Poilievre. Later, through official party channels, a follow-up clarified that Jeneroux had spoken with the Conservative leader after announcing his resignation and that his main reason for leaving was to spend more time with his family.

"I had a great conversation with Pierre Poilievre, who wished me all the best, as I do him."
