Dan Trachtenberg, director of the Predator franchise, shared his vision for continuing Kevin Costner's controversial 1995 sci-fi film Waterworld. After successfully reviving the Predator series, Trachtenberg revealed which intellectual property he would like to reboot next.
Speaking at the red carpet premiere of Predator: Badlands, Trachtenberg expressed his desire to revisit Waterworld not as a film sequel, but as an open-world video game.
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game. I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie. That's what I want to see."
Trachtenberg's idea aligns with a broader trend where video games serve as official sequels to popular movies. An example is Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009), which takes place after the events of Ghostbusters II and follows a new character recruited by the Ghostbusters as they handle paranormal investigations in New York City.
Trachtenberg’s approach emphasizes expanding the story universe through interactive media rather than traditional film sequels.
