The Liberals’ newest caucus member, Chris d’Entremont, suggested that other Conservative MPs might follow his lead.
Chris d’Entremont, a Nova Scotia MP, announced his decision to leave the Conservative caucus and join the minority Liberal government. This move came just hours after the Liberals tabled their budget.
At a press conference in Ottawa, Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed d’Entremont to the Liberal caucus, emphasizing the importance of his decision during a critical time for the country.
“I’m honoured to welcome him as the newest member of our government caucus. Chris’s decision to join the government caucus at this crucial moment for our country is exceptionally valuable and important.”
The Liberals currently hold a minority government, just two seats short of a majority that would ensure the passage of their budget without opposition support.
Speaking to reporters, d’Entremont explained that he had been reconsidering his position over several months as he felt increasingly out of step with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s ideals.
“Over the last number of months, I wasn’t feeling that I was aligned with the ideals of what the leader of the opposition had been talking about. So, I’ve been sort of relooking at what my career is bringing, and what I can do for my constituency.”
The floor-crossing by d’Entremont reflects growing tensions within the Conservative Party and may signal further defections to the Liberals.
