Jim Belushi spoke exclusively with PEOPLE about one of his most memorable moments from the early days of his Hollywood career, which included his late brother, John Belushi. John, known for his work on Saturday Night Live and The Blues Brothers, tragically passed away in 1982 at the age of 33.
Beginning in 1975, John became a breakthrough comedic talent as part of the original cast of Saturday Night Live. Together with Dan Aykroyd, he created the beloved characters “Joliet” Jake and Elwood Blues, forming what would become the band The Blues Brothers.
The duo debuted as musical guests on Saturday Night Live in April 1978. Later that year, after assembling a full band, they opened for comedian Steve Martin during his residency at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.
“That time in our lives was all about creativity, connection, and brotherhood,” Jim shared at the Song Sung Blue premiere at AFI Fest in Los Angeles on October 26.
The actor and comedian, now 71, said that the early period in Hollywood remains one of his most cherished memories, both because of his own beginnings and because it allowed him to witness his brother’s tremendous artistic growth.
