In 2025, the Roadrunners celebrate their 15th football season. As one of the more recent FBS programs and now in their third year competing in the American Conference, UTSA built its football team from the ground up. After a practice year in 2010, the team played its debut season as an FCS Independent in 2011 before joining the Western Athletic Conference the following year.
UTSA transitioned into Conference USA in 2013 and officially became an FBS member for the 2014 season. That inaugural 2011 campaign was notable for setting NCAA modern startup records, including an opening crowd of 56,743 fans against Northeastern State and an average home attendance of 35,521 across six games.
The program’s first postseason trip came at the 2016 New Mexico Bowl in only its sixth year. In 2017, UTSA earned its first victory over a Big 12 opponent with a 17–10 win against Baylor.
In 2021, the Roadrunners opened the season with a road triumph over Illinois of the Big Ten, claimed their first conference title after defeating WKU 49–42, and capped the year at 12–2 with their third bowl appearance. They repeated as league champions in 2022, beating North Texas 48–27 and finishing that season 11–3.
“UTSA made history in 2021, opening the fall with a road win against Illinois of the Big Ten Conference.”
UTSA’s football journey showcases rapid success—from a brand-new team in 2011 to back-to-back conference champions within a decade, marking 15 years of swift growth.
