James Overy has achieved a proud milestone by receiving his first senior international call-up for Australia in the November internationals.
The 17-year-old full-back has spent the last month training with Manchester United’s first team following his participation in Australia’s U20 World Cup campaign in Chile. This opportunity has allowed him to train alongside senior professionals such as Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw, impressing the coaching staff with his progress.
"Overy has impressed coaches at United since he began training with the senior squad."
While it is still unknown when Overy will make his senior debut for United, coach Ruben Amorim gave debuts to three youngsters last season, which hints at the possibility of Overy featuring soon in first-team action.
Overy advanced rapidly, going from the youngest member of Australia's U20 World Cup squad to his first senior call-up. Australia’s manager Tony Popovic has indicated that Overy could make his senior debut in one of two upcoming friendlies.
Australia will face Venezuela in Houston on 14 November, followed by a match against Colombia in New York.
"Australia manager Tony Popovic has opened the door for the United youngster to make his senior debut in one of the two upcoming friendly matches later this month."
Author’s summary: James Overy’s rapid rise from youth competitions to senior international recognition highlights his potential and the confidence placed in him by coaches at both Manchester United and Australia.
