Manchester United prospect James Overy has received a surprise call-up to the Australia national team for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. Socceroos manager Tony Popovic named 11 new players in his squad, including the promising United academy talent.
Overy, who turns 18 this weekend, joined Manchester United in summer 2024 on a scholarship before signing a professional contract in July. In May, coach Ruben Amorim invited him and other young players to first-team training ahead of their Premier League match against Chelsea.
Shortly after joining the Red Devils, Overy was sidelined for eight months due to injury. He made his debut for the Under-18s in February, according to the Manchester Evening News. This season, he has been a regular in Darren Fletcher's Under-21 side, competing in Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.
“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,” said former Under-18s manager Adam Lawrence in an interview with MUTV.
James Overy’s call-up highlights his rapid progression and resilience, positioning him as a future key figure for both club and country.
