The Met Office has provided clarity on snowfall expectations in the UK following recent reports predicting wintry weather for southern cities like London and Southampton.
Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst confirmed that while snowfall is anticipated, it will mostly be confined to Scotland's highest peaks.
“At this stage, for the vast majority of people it looks unlikely,” he said. “At the moment, there is a little bit of snow falling over the Scottish mountains, so anyone in the Cairngorms could be seeing some on the summits up there.”
The forecaster noted that any snow on the Scottish mountains would be brief, warning that temperatures will become much milder soon after.
“This weekend we could see temporary coverings of snow on the Scottish mountains, but by Sunday night and through to Monday, the whole of next week looks very mild,” Mr Dewhurst explained.
The Met Office cautions that weather next weekend may be very variable, adding uncertainty for those hoping for consistent wintry conditions.
Despite some media claims, significant snowfall across the UK will be rare and short-lived, with warmer weather dominating the coming week, especially outside the Scottish highlands.
Author’s note: The UK faces only brief, localized snow in the highlands, with generally mild and changeable weather prevailing in the near term.
