American Legion Volunteers to Fly Flags this Weekend for Veterans Day

As Veterans Day approaches, communities prepare once again to honor the nation’s heroes and display the flag—the enduring emblem of freedom and unity in the United States. Volunteers from the American Legion will lead efforts to raise the red, white, and blue this weekend.

The American flag has represented the country since June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress established the Flag Act. It has flown on battlefields, over government buildings, schools, and cemeteries, symbolizing service and sacrifice across generations.

Secretary Charles Thomson explained in 1782 that red represents valor and bravery, white stands for purity and innocence, and blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

In Webster City, American Legion members Gene Williams and Steve Struchen recently demonstrated the proper way to handle and fold the American flag. While they worked, LuAnn Jackson read aloud the symbolism of each fold. The group gathered to repair flags damaged by weather at Graceland Cemetery—an ongoing effort to preserve respect for the nation’s emblem.

The same lessons are regularly shared in schools, where Legion members teach younger generations the importance of honoring the flag and the values it embodies. Their continued dedication ensures that every star and stripe remains a living tribute to service, courage, and unity.

Volunteer Efforts Continue

With the help of community volunteers and the American Legion, the flags will rise once again this weekend—standing as a symbol of national pride and remembrance.
