Former tabloid editor's 'life-affirming' job delivering good news

Former Tabloid Editor Finds New Purpose Delivering Good News

Alan Muir, former editor of the Scottish Sun, now shares uplifting news for the People’s Postcode Lottery, spreading positivity after a long career in journalism.

From Tabloid Editing to Winners' Stories

After 30 years at the Scottish Sun, rising from reporter to editor, Muir now leads the Postcode Lottery’s winners' stories team. He personally visits winners to share news of prizes, sometimes worth millions.

Working Like a Newsroom

Muir and his team — communications officer Pamela Stirling and reporter Craig Stewart — operate in a newsroom style, interviewing winners and crafting stories for local and national media when winners consent to publicity.

"It’s turning the clock back 40-odd years for me to being a junior reporter knocking a door – there’s no difference at all. It’s what I always loved to do… every single week is different."

Daily Winners and Tight Deadlines

With new winners announced every day, Muir’s team works under tight deadlines to produce timely stories. The job involves considerable travel, covering 120,000 miles last year alone to reach winners across Great Britain.

Life-Affirming Work After Four Decades

Muir describes this role as “life-affirming,” offering a fresh perspective after decades in journalism focused on more challenging stories.
