Cloud Gaming Has Finally Officially Arrived on the PlayStation Portal

Cloud Gaming Officially Arrives on PlayStation Portal

Cloud streaming has officially launched on the PlayStation Portal today, allowing users to play games directly on the device without needing a PS5 connection. This update arrives two years after the handheld's debut and follows a year of beta testing.

While the Portal doesn’t run the games independently, a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription now enables full cloud gameplay. The latest system update brings the device much closer to being a genuine successor to the PSP.

“Cloud streaming for the PS Portal will soon officially go live for everyone with a compatible subscription,”

announced Sony on the official PlayStation Blog earlier today. The feature lets the portable console operate freely from the main system, requiring no additional setup once activated.

When first released in 2023, the PlayStation Portal faced criticism for limited capabilities and its reliance on remote play with the PS5. Earlier handhelds like the PSP and PS Vita could play games natively, whereas the initial Portal setup made it function more as an accessory than a standalone console.
