Sony embraces cloud gaming on PlayStation Portal, but requires $18/month subscription

Sony Expands Cloud Gaming on PlayStation Portal

While Google’s Stadia fades into the past, cloud gaming continues to grow, and Sony is deepening its commitment with the PlayStation Portal handheld. This device, similar to the Steam Deck, does not operate independently but streams content from a PlayStation 5 console.

PlayStation Portal Now Supports Cloud Gaming

Starting today, all PlayStation Portal users can access cloud gaming directly on the handheld. This allows playing select digital PS5 games from a user’s library without requiring a connection to a PlayStation 5 through Remote Play.

Access to Cloud Games Through PlayStation Plus

The Portal also offers a catalog of PlayStation games available via cloud streaming through a PlayStation Plus subscription. To improve usability, the device receives a new “Cloud Streaming home screen” and a search feature to find playable games from either owned titles or those accessible with PlayStation Plus.

Additional Features in the Update

“Starting today, all PlayStation Portal owners will be able to use cloud gaming on the handheld, accessing select digital PS5 games without a PlayStation 5 connection.”

The network status page, a much-needed addition, rounds out the update to enhance the overall handheld experience.
