Jenson Button imposed a sex ban on his then-girlfriend while fighting to win the Formula 1 drivers' championship in 2009. The British driver claimed the sport's most prestigious title after an incredible rise from adversity.
At the end of the previous season, Button's F1 career was uncertain when Honda suddenly withdrew from the sport. The Brackley-based team, which later became Mercedes, was close to folding and risking hundreds of job losses. A rescue effort led by team principals Ross Brawn and Nick Fry saved the team.
With Mercedes power units, Button started the season brilliantly, winning six of the first seven Grands Prix, which gave him a strong lead in the championship. However, as the season progressed, Button, now 45, felt pressure as teammates Rubens Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel reduced his advantage.
His model partner Jessica Michibata supported him throughout the year. After finishing fifth in Singapore, Button praised her:
"My amazing girlfriend... after qualifying, we got to my room. I'm not going to tell you all the details but she said lie down, so I did, and she gave me a foot massage. She said, 'So tell me about today.' That was so cool. She really listens."
Button’s 2009 championship victory was shaped by overcoming team adversity and personal dedication, with strong support from his partner Jessica Michibata.
