Zbigniew Ziobro, who served as Poland's justice minister under the previous Conservative (PiS) government, has refused to attend a parliamentary hearing regarding the lifting of his immunity from prosecution.
He faces 26 charges brought by Polish prosecutors, accusing him of alleged abuse of power during his time in office, according to the Tusk government.
Since October 27, Ziobro has been staying in Budapest to avoid arrest.
The parliamentary committee has approved the justice ministry’s request to strip Ziobro of his immunity, allowing for his arrest and detention pending trial.
This committee recommendation is set for a parliamentary vote on November 7, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s coalition holding a majority and having already approved similar motions for other indicted PiS officials.
"I am not going back to Poland because I was told I would be arrested and detained even before the hearing took place, which I believe is unlawful."
Ziobro denies all charges against him and insists the legal actions are unjust.
