Hungary has confirmed it will permit Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter Budapest for an upcoming summit with US President Donald Trump, according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
Putin currently faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes. Despite this, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced plans in April to withdraw Hungary from the ICC. The Hungarian government also welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Budapest, disregarding an ICC warrant against him related to war crimes in Gaza.
The government will argue that the warrants have no effect in Budapest.
US President Donald Trump announced a scheduled meeting with Putin in Budapest to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Szijjarto noted that the specific dates for the summit will be arranged after upcoming talks between US and Russian foreign ministers next week.
Author's summary: Hungary plans to enable Putin's visit for a summit with Trump, disregarding ICC warrants, as the two leaders aim to address the Ukraine conflict diplomatically.
