A significant weather system is set to bring thunderstorms, damaging winds, and hail to much of Western Australia this week. Some regions may receive 50mm or more of rain by Thursday night.
The stormy conditions are linked to a trough and low-pressure system off the west coast. Earlier in the week, these systems brought warm and sunny weather.
Lightning storms began impacting areas south of Perth early Tuesday morning, accompanied by scattered showers. Storms briefly subsided during the day but regained strength overnight.
One meteorological note: "The eastern side of a trough line is a really good spot for thunderstorm development," which explains the emergence of storms following a sunny weekend.
Over the weekend, a trough formed along the west coast, bringing warm, pleasant weather to much of the state before the low-pressure system developed within it on Monday, ending the sunny spell.
The final month of spring in Western Australia has been a mix of warm nights and approaching thunderstorms with lightning displays expected in the coming days.
