As Veterans Day approaches, communities in the Rochester area are recognizing the dedication and courage of local service members with several events scheduled before and on Tuesday, Nov. 11. In Monroe County, there are more than 31,000 veterans—about 4% of the population, according to the latest Census data.
On Friday morning, more than 350 veterans and their families gathered at the Rochester Institute of Technology for the 14th annual Veterans Day Breakfast, held at the Gordon Field House. The event celebrated the service and sacrifice of military members and their loved ones.
“It’s a community that you have all around the United States and all around the world without even knowing each other,” said Navy veteran Kate Magsaysay. “So the word ‘veteran’ to me is an automatic sense of community and connection.”
The program featured a presentation of colors, an armed forces salute, and remarks from New York State Veterans’ Services Commissioner Viviana DeCohen.
On Saturday, Monroe County will host its fourth annual Veterans Day Parade. The procession begins at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of South Goodman Street and Highland Avenue. From there, it will move along Highland Avenue, ending at the Greater Rochester Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Gary Beikirch Park on South Avenue.
The parade honors all who have served, with a special acknowledgment of Vietnam veterans and their enduring legacy.
The Rochester community pays tribute to its veterans through RIT’s annual breakfast and a county parade, emphasizing unity, gratitude, and remembrance.
