Humanitarian Demining and Reforestation: HI and Communities Building the Future Together

By working towards a safe and sustainable future in Colombia, HI remains dedicated to peace and security for communities affected by armed violence.

In September 2025, a tree planting activity took place in Carepa, Antioquia. On the right in the images, Oscar Graciano, a farmer and community leader, is shown supporting the initiative.

Humanitarian Demining Efforts

In Colombia, HI conducts humanitarian demining operations to restore safety in regions impacted by armed conflict, enabling communities to live and move freely on their land.

These operations are often demanding and require clearing vegetation to ensure that no mines or explosives are hidden underneath.

This is the case in Carepa, north-western Colombia, where Arbey Pino, an HI deminer, has been actively working.

"To clear mines, we often have to clear the ground and sometimes it is necessary to cut down trees. So, to mitigate the impact of our actions, we decided to replant trees. We want communities to be able to feed themselves with the fruits, but the aim is also to prevent soil erosion near rivers and promote the planting of species native to the region."

Arbey, a native of the area, adds:

"With these trees, we are planting not only vegetation, but also hope for a better future."

Balancing Safety and Environmental Care

While removing explosive hazards is critical for safety, HI integrates environmental restoration through reforestation to support sustainable livelihoods and protect the local ecosystem.

Author's summary: HI’s humanitarian demining in Colombia combines meticulous safety work with reforestation efforts to foster environmental recovery and community hope for lasting peace.
