WCC commemorates 100th anniversary of Dominee Izaak Samuel Kijne’s ministry

WCC marks 100 years since Dominee Izaak Samuel Kijne’s ministry began

The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary, Rev. Dr Jerry Pillay, sent a letter to the Evangelical Christian Church in Tanah Papua to commemorate the centenary of Dominee Izaak Samuel Kijne’s ministry.

“First, let us all recognize the outsized significance of Rev. Kijne (1899–1970),” wrote Pillay.

He described Kijne as a forerunner of modern Christian mission, one that learns from and stands alongside the people, particularly those marginalized by colonialism, poor governance, and social or economic injustice. Pillay emphasized that churches must work with communities to protect human dignity.

“He planted the seeds and example of the church’s untiring advocacy for human rights and the independence and self-sufficiency of the Papuan people,” noted Pillay.

Pillay also praised Kijne’s view that Christian faith demands real commitment to social and political reconciliation and peace. He called Kijne “a giant forbear for faith, democracy, community building, and justice,” whose legacy continues to guide Papua’s Christians and citizens.

“We recognize the ongoing challenges faced by the people of Papua — challenges of justice, peace, human rights and dignity, and concerns for the environment,” wrote Pillay.
