Life and Legacy

Another chapter of our book has closed. Marian (née Hardaker) Pottruff was born on July 7, 1932, and passed away on October 30, 2025. She was the daughter of Richard Hardaker, who was recruited from Yorkshire, England, as a dye-chemist for Penman's mills in Paris, Ontario. He married Fern Mower, a descendant of the Crysler family from Upper Canada Village. Marian and her younger sister Joan joined the family there.

Early Career and Marriage

In grade 10, Marian’s typing speed attracted the attention of a J.D. Adams recruiter at Paris High School. With a full-time job secured, she persuaded her parents to let her leave school early. At J.D. Adams, she met Clinton Pottruff, a farmer. Their romance was marked by spirited challenges, a discreet marriage, and an elopement to Florida until things settled down.

Family and Community

Married life was spent on a farm where Marian raised three children. Her home welcomed every child in Bethel. She immersed her children in a world of books, valuing trips to the library over television.

"In spite of her tireless care... not once did she remind us we owed her."

She raised her family surrounded by a close-knit community, with the Leach, Miller, and Davis families becoming integral parts of their lives.
