Keeler Johnson analyzes the upcoming Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack along with the James F. Lewis III Stakes at Laurel Park. Saturday promises an exciting day with 16 stakes races across the U.S. and Canada, including seven graded events.
Among the ungraded stakes, two races stand out for their strong fields: the Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct and the James F. Lewis III Stakes at Laurel Park. Notably, the Dwyer has lost its graded status, a decline from its Grade 1 tenure between 1983 and 1988. Nevertheless, the one-mile dirt race attracted six competitive three-year-olds, including three graded stakes winners.
One of the favorites is #2 Disco Time, an undefeated colt trained by Brad Cox. Disco Time impressed this winter by winning the Lecomte Stakes (G3), and after a long break, he dominated the St. Louis Derby by 5 1/2 lengths, posting an impressive 101 Beyer speed figure.
“Disco Time benefited from securing an uncontested lead in the St. Louis Derby, and his 101 Beyer marked a huge jump forward from his first three starts.”
However, Saturday's race presents a tougher challenge with two serious pace rivals, which could jeopardize Disco Time’s ability to replicate that speed figure in just his second start back.
One principal pace rival is #1 Tip Top Thomas. This colt led wire-to-wire to claim victory in the Indiana Derby (G3) by half a length as well as the Smarty Jones Stakes.
Saturday's slate offers plenty for bettors to consider, balancing proven graded winners with outsiders looking to upset.
