A 21-year-old Brampton resident, Sahibjot Singh, received a sentence of approximately 654 days in custody for a violent incident involving police in North Bay in May 2024.
Singh drove a stolen SUV through busy streets in North Bay and pinned an acting sergeant between vehicles during a chaotic attempt to escape law enforcement.
The sentencing, handed down at the North Bay Courthouse, concluded lengthy proceedings that explored Singh’s dangerous flight, drug use, time in pre-trial detention, and attempts at rehabilitation.
"Before the sentence was read, Singh sat upright, locked on the judge. He rarely blinked as she spoke, listening closely to every word."
Singh, a student visa holder from India, had been in custody since his arrest on May 31, 2024. At that time, he was already under a release order from Peel Region.
The sentence was delivered by Justice Erin Lainevool, who reserved judgment until the end of October 2024.
Sahibjot Singh faces nearly two additional years in jail following his dangerous police encounter and multiple serious offenses involving stolen property and drug use.
