During its regular session on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the County of Brant Council reviewed a request for municipal backing of a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
With growing energy demands in Ontario, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is actively securing energy resources to meet needs through the 2030s and beyond.
Representatives Bogdan Dinu of Ferma Energy and Aaron Weigel from Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. detailed Ferma’s plan to submit a BESS proposal to IESO.
“The site, which will be leased from the landowners, is an ideal location for this type of project because of its proximity to high voltage lines, and especially the lines having capacity. The project would sit on approximately 30 acres and be interconnected to those 230 kilovolt (kV) lines that run east to west,” explained Bogdan Dinu.
The land, previously an aggregate quarry operated by Brant Aggregates until 2025, is flat, clear, and free from known environmental concerns or sensitivities.
Brant Council is considering support for a significant battery storage initiative poised to strengthen Ontario’s energy infrastructure using an ideally located, environmentally sound site.
“The parcel is the location of a former aggregate quarry that was operated by Brant Aggregates until 2025 and the land is flat and clear with no known environmental concerns or sensitivities.”
Author’s note: The proposed BESS project represents a strategic move to enhance regional energy capacity by utilizing a well-situated site free of environmental issues.
