Look closely at your change for a red poppy—Canada has issued a striking new Remembrance Day circulation coin. The Royal Canadian Mint released a $2 commemorative coin to honor the 25th anniversary of bringing the Unknown Soldier home.
The coin was unveiled during the annual Veterans’ Week Candlelight Tribute in Ottawa, attended by military and government officials. Veterans Affairs Minister Jill McKnight highlighted its meaning:
“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands as a powerful symbol of the more than 120,000 Canadians who gave their lives for peace and freedom.”
“This coin not only marks the 25th anniversary of the entombment, it helps preserve the proud legacy of our fallen heroes and ensures their sacrifice is never forgotten.”
In May 2000, the remains of the Unknown Soldier were brought from a First World War cemetery near Vimy, France, back to Canada. The casket stayed in the Parliament’s Centre Block Hall of Honour for three days, where thousands paid tribute.
On May 28, 2000, the Unknown Soldier was entombed with full military honours in a granite-and-bronze sarcophagus at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
